In the United Methodist Church this is Charge Conference time. What that means is a lot of reports and nominating and electing new church leaders for the coming year, 2021. The committee that has the responsibility of finding church members to take leadership positions every year is the Nominating/Lay Leadership Committee. It is an interesting job, a frustrating job, and a rewarding job. We really do try to put “spiritual gifts and graces” of church members into the right open slots. However, sometimes everyone is not on the same page. So we get both “no’s and yes’s”.  Since my first church I have often heard those of the senior generation say, “ask the younger ones, I have served my time”. My response, which has almost always left them speechless or not happy, or both, has always been and still is, “THERE IS NO RETIREMENT PLAN WHEN YOU SIGN UP FOR THE LORD’S ARMY, ONLY GRADUATION (heaven).” With that in mind, let me share a little “text” a follower sent the Lord requiring serving Him in the Lord’s army:

Dear Lord, I want to serve you so badly! I’m literally burning with the fever. I’ve been on a vacation and I am more ready than I have ever been! What I need now is an assignment. That is what I would like to discuss with you.

I have been asked to chair a committee in our church, but I was hoping that you would agree with me that it is not quite right. They need a teacher badly in the Middle School Sunday School area but I know too many of the children; wild bunch if I ever saw one (It’s no wonder considering the homes they come from!). I would love to help out in the nursery or children’s church, but that would mean missing the worship service occasionally, and I know you would not want me to do that. Besides, I have aged out of that area. The woman next door can’t drive. She needs help with her groceries and she needs company, but she never lets go once she gets ahold of you.

How about something different? No nursing homes please. Once the nursing homes are reopened for visits I just can’t go. I can’t stand some of what I see in those places.

I know you’ll think of something! I can hardly wait!

With all my love,

“Ima Servant”

Something to ponder today my family, friends, and flocks. Is the Lord calling you to active duty? Is it time to report? The battle is raging and his Army needs troops. What say you? Amen & Amen.

Agape,

Rev. Rich
