I was supposed to continue my discussion on the Prayer of Jabez today, but I will get back to that tomorrow. As for today, an event last night changed my devotion theme.  All of us probably have a smoke detector or detectors in our homes. Why is it that the battery in those confounded things only wear down in the middle of the night?!!! Seriously, I don’t ever remember that “chirping/beeping” sound during the day. I have only heard it in the middle of the night after I am comfortably asleep. Such was the case last night.

During the middle of the night I heard “beep”.  At first I wasn’t sure what had woken me up. As I lay there trying to get comfortable to fall back asleep I again hear … “beep”. And who designed those beeps to be spaced so far apart in beeping?! On the second beep I began my prayer … “Oh Lord, please tell me I didn’t hear the smoke detector beep”. About that time, I heard it again; “Beep”.  Grumbling, I threw off my sheet, stumbled around for my glasses and out in the hallway to determine which of the 2 smoke detectors was beeping. Of course, I had to wait for a beep. Finally, between a red light on one smoke detector and a beep I was pretty sure it was the one in the hallway, where of course there is no light!  Grabbing a stool and a flashlight, I climbed up and removed the battery. Pleased with my “handyman ability” I climbed back down the stool and prepared to go back to bed, when I heard “BEEP”. I looked in my hand at the battery and thought, “WHAT?!!!” About a minute later I heard “BEEP” AGAIN, and it was definitely coming from the smoke detector I had just taken the battery out of and had not yet replaced with a new one. Really not too happy, I climbed back up the stool. By now, Richie had joined me in the hallway as had Debbie, offering me advice I did not want and directions I really did not want to hear! I pulled the unit down exposing the wires. There was no reset button and no battery but it continuing that maddening “BEEP” every 45 seconds or so. I was now tired, angry, frustrated and thinking it’s just a smoke detector why is it not off!  By this time, I am thinking a hammer to the offending demon seed or a shot gun blast and I would just repay the church for the damage. I couldn’t get the wires to unplug from the smoke detector for the longest time. Just as I was ready to utter every Hebrew curse word I knew to melt the components and shut the thing off, I got the plug pulled out. Satisfied, I climbed back down the stool from this epic half hour battle. Suffice it to say, I WAS NOT SLEEPY!  But I was at least satisfied I had won the battle. Suddenly … “BEEP”!  What…how…!!!!???? I am holding a smoke detector detached from the wires in the ceiling, missing a battery and it is still beeping!!!  How is that even possible?! I have now completely lost it. This smoke detector has got to be possessed!  There is no other answer! I hauled it out to the garage and left it there. This morning as my blood pressure returned to normal I picked it up, took it to church, got a new battery in it and put it back in place after lunch with no issues. But if it goes off again I am calling a Roman Catholic friend and asking for Holy Water and the Exorcism Ritual!!!!

All this is to say that even the best Christians and Pastors have moments where they lose their religion. And while you may lose your religion every now and then, NEVER LOSE YOUR FAITH! Because in the end you are going to encounter a lot of “smoke detectors” in your life. You can handle them, but the true evil and hard things of life can only be handled through your faith in Jesus. So put your hand in Jesus’ hand and walk with him. You will find everything else is a little easier walking with Jesus, even demonically possessed smoke detectors.   Amen & Amen!
