The Prayer of Jabez - Conclusion

by: Rich Vaughan

The prayer of Jabez closes with these words, “Oh, that Your hand would be with me! Oh, that You would keep me from evil!” The term, “hand of the Lord” is a Biblical term for God’s presence and power in the lives of His people (Think Holy Spirit in the New Testament). The early church understood that thinking; early believers constantly sought to be filled by God (Acts 4:23-31). I love the way Paul puts it in Ephesians 3:19: all Christians s...

The Prayer of Jabez Continued...

Jabez’s second request in his prayer was to, “enlarge my territory”. This request is not really selfish either because Jabez is asking so that he can make a greater impact for the Lord. In many ways this should be a request every Christian and church should make. Bruce Wilkinson is the author of the book, “The Prayer of Jabez”. He recounts in his book a fascinating story of challenging a large Christian college in California during a speaki...

Prayer of Jabez - Part 2

by: Rich Vaughan

On Monday, August 3rd, we began to talk about the prayer of Jabez found in the book of I Chronicles 4:9-10.

“Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, That Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from all Evil.”

In that prayer are four requests: “bless me”, “enlarge my territory”, “be with me” (God), and “keep me from evil”. Some wonder...

The Demon Seed From Hell or The Demonically Possessed Smoke Detector!

by: Rich Vaughan

I was supposed to continue my discussion on the Prayer of Jabez today, but I will get back to that tomorrow. As for today, an event last night changed my devotion theme.  All of us probably have a smoke detector or detectors in our homes. Why is it that the battery in those confounded things only wear down in the middle of the night?!!! Seriously, I don’t ever remember that “chirping/beeping” sound during the day. I have only heard it in the middl...

The Prayer of Jabez

Twenty years ago, a small book (92 pages) took the religious world by storm. Written by Dr. Bruce H. Wilkerson, it was entitled, “The Prayer of Jabez” (By the way, spell check does not like Hebrew names!). Found in the Biblical book of I Chronicles there is an interesting story behind Jabez. In the 4th chapter of that book there is a continued list of over 500 Hebrew names covering the official family tree of the 12 Hebrew tribes. This list actual...

The Devil's Beatitudes

by: Rich Vaughan

Starting this Sunday (August 2nd) and running through Sunday, August 16th, I am doing a three-part sermon series on the Beatitudes that Jesus shares in the Gospel of Matthew. Working on this series got me to thinking: Did you know there are two sets of Beatitudes? Actually, there are a lot more since the term beatitude is defined as “a declaration of blessedness on the ground of some virtue or good fortune”. A beatitude always begins, &...

The Second Greatest Christian Prayer

by: Rich Vaughan

07/30/2020

If anyone would ask a Christian today what is your greatest prayer, I think all of us would answer without hesitation, The Lord’s Prayer. How do you top a prayer voiced by Jesus, and used by Him to teach his disciples and we who would follow, how to pray? The answer is: you don’t! It is the greatest prayer ever prayed and one I have begun working as a sermon scheduled for the last Sunday in September (the 27th). However, I have just started workin...

God Wonders Me

The above subject line is based on words a nine-year-old boy said when he was in a state park looking around at nature.  Does God wonder you? Or as adults have we been so beaten down by the news and the world so much that we no long feel wonder? If so, how do we reclaim our wonder? Here’s how:

On the bookcase in my office is a hand carved wolf that is carved out of buckeye wood. Buckeye wood is a creamy/yellowish wood that is very special. ...

A Preacher With No Words

It happens to everyone who writes their own devotions, sermons, books etc. At some point you hit the proverbial wall. The dreaded “writers block”.  Today is that day for me. I have wrestled with what to say that would guide our spiritual lives today and enrich our spiritual journey.  What I have decided to do is offer some sayings that are true and short and sweet. I will call them REV. RICH’S 10 SUGGESTIONS (not commandments):

What A Day

If you missed yesterday’s services, you missed our youth leading and preaching the worship service and you missed a great chance to be renewed and revived! (You can still see the service online, here on our website, by clicking the sermons tab)

As I sat with Debbie (it’s been a long time since that was possible) and watched and listened to our youth, my soul was revived. It reminded me of what is right in the world. It renewed my faith and my hope for ...

Methodist Moments In Early America

by: Rich Vaughan

It might surprise you to know that the Methodist church in the 1800’s to the early 1900’s was the fastest growing Christian denomination in America. As America expanded westward the Methodist “Circuit Riding Preachers” went with the people. They had one mission as far as they were concerned, to “Offer Them Christ”. Some of you may remember in 1984 there was a huge Bicentennial Celebration for the Methodist church. The date 1784 was ba...

It's so hot...

…That Satan left NC and went back to Hell to cool off! It’s so hot that the fish you catch are already cooked! It’s so hot that Jehovah Witnesses and Mormons are only doing telemarketing and zoom calls! I think you get the point! As I write this devotional the heat Index says it is 110 and that has cooled DOWN from 114! We are supposed to stay in this heat wave for a while longer. Remember when we were all complaining about th...

The Preacher & The Bartender

by: Rich Vaughan

Every morning I read multiple devotions (4) to try and get my heart, mind, and soul heading in the right direction. One of those devotions is called “Right from the Heart”. Several weeks ago they had a devotion that I just loved.  It compared the similarities between a bar and a church and a bartender and a preacher. Before you say, “What? No way”, read the gist of this devotion:

IN BOTH PLACES:

People come looking f...

As many of you know, I just got back from a family vacation at the beach. All of our sons (except Ward who could not leave his new job), were there with their families. Added to our little group was our nephew Brian, his wife Abby, and their 2 girls. So we had 4 young ladies ranging in age from 10, 8, 6, & 21 months plus 9 adults. And yes is was as hot at the beach as it was here! It was a typical family vacation; hectic, crazy, fun, tiring, exciting (Brian & hi...

A Child's Heart

Several years ago, I was at a typical church Wednesday night event. There was food, fellowship, and a Bible Study. It was a typical night for me as well as I had eaten my dessert(s) first, then my meal, and was now traveling from table to table talking to all of my flock from youngest to oldest. One of our newer members, a 4-year-old, ran up to me and said “hi” and I said “hi” right back. Then suddenly, below my knee level, I realized someone els...
